Today I had a date...with my 7 year old son.
Throughout the school year, my son is in school and I'm out and about with my 2 younger daughters. Needless to say, he feels like he misses out on a lot. Truth be told, he kind of does. So, today, I asked him on a date.
I let him plan the whole thing and said yes to everything. First, we ate lunch at New York Fries. He talked about his friends, school and how it was cool to have "Mommy and Jonah" time. Then we had Laura Secord ice cream for dessert. I let him order for us. He picked Crunchy Chocolate Chip-great choice. Then we went in all the "cool" stores he doesn't usually get to go in. Apparently, when you're 7, West 49, Boathouse and the video game store are the only stores worth going in. Too funny. I let him pick a back to school outfit. He chose a retro Pac Man shirt and jeans-Very handsome.
On the way out of the last store, he asked if he could pick something for his sisters. How could I refuse?! He picked them out matching, fancy flip flops with flowers on them. Of course, they love them and feel extra special that their big brother picked them out.
So, although we really didn't do anything super exciting, we had a really great time. It was an excellent reminder to me of how important one-on-one time is to both my kids and to me. It was also a great reminder of how amazing he is, when he isn't competing and arguing with his 5 year old sister in particular.
